Kitchen set as Lettering
2022

Variable
Wooden cutlery, two cups in different size

The whole making process of KitchenSet is very spontaneous and intuitive, which is different from my usual research-based projects, and that’s the way I like it so much.

When I started working on it, I set only one goal for myself: if type design often involves manual control of the brush or considerations based on experience, then I would use neither hands nor experience. Instead, I would use the most ready-made objects as the typeface itself. So, I chose disposable knife, fork, and spoon I collected from my school, along with glasses in different size.

It was indeed a fun play! When a glyph is disassembled into straights and curves, simple kitchen set could also become words. The blade of the knife is the determining factor for the font size, while the glass becomes the radian of everything. The utensils have set the rules, all I have to do is ink and press. I didn't deliberately decide whether the typeface I created should be serif or sans-serif, regular or italic. For this project, I only wanted to let intuition guide me more than anything else.
