Decipher means more than ‘decoding a cipher’, it can also be ‘decoding a secret’. Humans excel at using one language to decipher another, as well as creating a model to fathom the mysteries of our universe. The journey began with a stone excavated in the 19th century, and shall continue with an armillary sphere i built today. This is my eternal voyage.

For a linguist, decoding a language may involve using the meanings of words to map their equivalents across different languages. But what does this mean for a visual communicator? All languages are equal; they can be broken down into countless strokes, transcending the barriers of understanding through their curves and lines. Decoding one language into another by continuously spelling for eight hours—during this time, the strokes become the only readable reference. Upon closer inspection, a third language reveals the answer: the arrangement of numbers too can reconstruct a language. Rosetta is also "罗塞塔"—and that is the visual deciphering.

In 1582, Thoinot Arbeau, in his treatise on practical astronomy, demonstrated how to convert a hand into a sundial. This might be seen as yet another attempt to use the ordinary things around us as instruments for exploring the cosmos. By simply holding a forty-five-degree wedge between the little and ring fingers, one could tell the time from the shifting shadow it cast upon the palm. Inspired by this, I placed a transparent cone engraved with verses about the moon upon cyanotype paper. Thus, as time continuously unfolds, the sun etches the moon’s trace onto the surface, while the moon, in turn, imprints the sun’s setting within its shadow.
